Carol's Daughter Hair Milk Review

If you have curly hair, I know I don’t have to tell you about the drama of keeping your curls looking defined, moisturized, and frizz-free. You are probably very familiar with that endless search for a product that defines your curls and makes them look healthy without leaving them crunchy and motionless. Many of you are sitting here reading this because you are probably still searching for the perfect product to do all that and then some for your curls. First let me start by saying, I can’t say that Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk is the PERFECT product for EVERYONE, but I can say that it has turned out to be an absolute God-send for me!

My sisters and I have spent our whole lives trying to “tame” our curls – even if they weren’t as unruly as we thought they were (lol). We are Puerto Rican and all three of us have very different curls and hair textures. My oldest sister has the thick, coarse hair with very consistent curl structure – big ones! My second oldest sister has thinner hair with smaller curls and more of a smooth texture to her hair. Then there’s me – around the temples I have some really small curls that frizz up at the drop of a dime, and then the rest of my hair alternates between medium curls and waves. The three of us represent the three different possibilities when you combine the genetics of an afro and almost bone-straight thickness.

I first learned about Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk while I was working on my PhD. I had a homegirl who was natural and swore by the Carol’s Daughter products. She used them for both herself and her daughter (who had locs). I remember I smelled the hair milk and thought “My goodness this smells so pretty,” but told myself that it wasn’t the right type of product for me. Back then, my hair was long and layered and I straightened it with a blow dryer, flat iron and 2-inch curling iron as often as I could. It was either that or slap it in a ponytail. This was also around the time in my life when I started to notice that the hair right at the front of my hairline at the top of my forehead looked like it was getting thin. So I tried a combination of the Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk and the Carol’s Daughter Healthy Hair Butter on my hair AFTER I straightened it. When it didn’t work (after one use – lol), I wrote it off saying that it was too heavy for my hair. Not once did I stop and say “Uh, Cassandra, maybe you shouldn’t be using BOTH products” or “Uh, Sandi, try not using as much product next time.”

Fast forward to 2007 - almost 10 years later. One day, I am upset that I feel like the thinning hair has gotten extremely noticeable and am crying to my boyfriend about it. Thinning hair doesn’t run in my family! So we sit down and think about it. Well, the first thing we did was decide that I would stop taking the birth control pill after seeing the tiny “other side effects” section mention “scalp hair loss” (but I’ll leave that story for another time). Next, we talked about me getting my hair cut short enough so that I would not be tempted to pull it back into the tight ponytail that I had been wearing since my hair was long enough to even pull back in a ponytail. After a few months, I also decided to stop straightening my hair and give my hair a break. It was at that same time that I decided to give Carol’s Daughter products another try.

I bought a whole hair care regimen from Carol’s Daughter when I placed that first order after 10 years. I did my research, reading the descriptions about each product from the shampoos, hair smoothies, leave-in conditioners, hair milk, healthy hair butter, and hair oils. What I was looking for was the recipe to combating my dry, multiple textured, frizzy hair without weighing it down to the point where I looked like a grease monkey. Let me just give you Carol’s Daughter’s description of the Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk:

“This light, fast-absorbing lotion for the hair is made with essential oil of lemongrass to stimulate natural oil production. Vitamins C and E provide an antioxidant boost while a hint of lily of the valley fragrance perfumes hair beautifully. Hair Milk is ideal for defining natural curls and giving hair loads of shine and bounce. Lemongrass stimulates scalp circulation and adds luster to dull hair. Sweet almond oil, a natural nut oil that is high in fatty acids and easily absorbed by the scalp.”

I was sold! I honestly didn’t know that when I used it the first time 10 years ago, that it was intended for me to use on my natural curls, not on my straightened hair. For two years now, I have been shampooing with either the Carol’s Daughter Khoret Amen with Sea Moss Shampoo or Rosemary Mint with Sea Moss Shampoo, then using the Carol’s Daughter Tui Herbal Shampoo as a light conditioning treatment, once a week using the Carol’s Daughter Tui Hair Smoothie as a conditioner, applying a small amount of Carol’s Daughter Lisa’s Hair Elixir to the scalp area where it was thinning (which also happened to be extremely flaky and itchy), and then the Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk once my hair is almost fully air dried. The Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk, once I scrunch it into my hair from the ends up, immediately adds shine and definition to my curls.

I have not seen my curls look THIS good in my entire adult life. The last time I think my curls looked this good and consistent was when I was like 3 years old and had a huge afro. After all these years, with the help of Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk, I finally have the curl look I have been wanting! I even had a woman in the store ask me “Is your hair permed or are those your natural curls?” and I proudly said “No ma’am, these are my natural curls.” She smiled and replied “Oh my God, I am SO jealous! I WISH my hair would do that!”

I mean REALLY, what more could a naturally curly headed sista ask for???

hair question 2 years ago

hi there, i was wondering as far as products go if i were looking for something to give my hair a slight greesed look is this possibly without the hair bring oily?

id rather not use a LOT of hair spray and heat (which buffs the spray so its shiny and hard) which i don't want to do

if not oily is not an option ill go for oily as well since this isn't everyday use.

as long as what ever you suggest is not harmful to hair or creates hair loss

I absolutely love Carol's Daughter's products! Her flagship store is just a few blocks away from me. I'm not familiar with this product but everything I have ever bought there is just...well, magnificent.

Her Twi oil is amazing for locs - and I must get down there and get some. Nothing seems to get rid of the frizzies like the twi oil - and it smells luscious!

Thanks for the information. I'll look into it. Nice to meet you too, by the way! I'll keep up with you and become a fan. Yay!

Rated up of course and useful!
